Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis) follow Christ from Pilate’s judgment hall to the tomb. Catholics pray them especially in Lent and on Fridays, meditating on each step of the Passion and uniting their sufferings with His. The fourteen stations used today were fixed by the Franciscans and approved for the whole Church.

How to Pray

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. My Lord, Jesus Christ, You have made this journey to die for me with unspeakable love; and I have so many times ungratefully abandoned You. But now I love You with my whole heart, and because I love You, I repent sincerely for ever having offended You. Never permit me to separate myself from You again. Grant that I may love You always; and then do with me what You will.

At each station

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.

Because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

Genuflect or bow. Name the station. Pray the response above. Meditate on the mystery. Then pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be, or the prayer given for that station.

The Fourteen Stations

  1. 1

    Jesus Is Condemned to Death

    Iesus Christus damnatur ad mortem

Pilate… delivered Jesus to their will. (Luke 23:25)

    Meditation

Christ, innocent and holy, accepts the sentence of death for our sins. Pilate washes his hands, but guilt remains where truth is abandoned.

    For our lives

We examine how often we choose comfort over justice and silence over truth.

  2. 2

    Jesus Carries His Cross

    Iesus crucem suam baiulat

He went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called Golgotha. (John 19:17)

    Meditation

The wood that will kill Him rests on shoulders already bruised from scourging. He embraces the instrument of torture as the instrument of salvation.

    For our lives

Every cross permitted in our life can be united with His for the redemption of the world.

  3. 3

    Jesus Falls the First Time

    Iesus prima vice cadit

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. (Isaiah 53:4)

    Meditation

Weak from loss of blood, He collapses under the weight. The God who holds the universe cannot walk without falling, out of love for us.

    For our lives

Christ sanctifies our weakness; no fall is wasted when offered back to Him.

  4. 4

    Jesus Meets His Mother

    Iesus Matri suae occurrit

Simeon said to Mary: a sword will pierce through your own soul also. (Luke 2:35)

    Meditation

Their eyes meet in silent agony. The Virgin who once held the Infant now sees Him crushed for sinners. Her sorrow is joined to His.

    For our lives

Mary walks every Via Crucis with her children; we entrust our grief to her Immaculate Heart.

  5. 5

    Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus

    Simon Cyrenaeus Iesum adiuvat

They seized a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and made him carry the cross. (Luke 23:26)

    Meditation

A stranger is pulled from the crowd and forced to share the burden. What began as compulsion becomes grace, Simon touches the Cross of salvation.

    For our lives

We are called to relieve the suffering of others; in serving them we serve Christ.

  6. 6

Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

    Veronica faciem Iesu extergit

I was hungry and you gave me food… as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me. (Matthew 25:35–40)

    Meditation

A woman breaks through the guards to wipe His face. Tradition holds Christ left the image of His countenance on her veil, mercy in the midst of cruelty.

    For our lives

Small acts of courage and kindness reach the face of Christ Himself.

  7. 7

    Jesus Falls the Second Time

    Iesus secunda vice cadit

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. (Isaiah 53:7)

    Meditation

Again the pavement strikes His wounded flesh. He rises without complaint, drawing strength only from obedience to the Father.

    For our lives

Repeated failure does not end the journey; perseverance in love completes it.

  8. 8

Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem

    Iesus mulieres Hierosolymitanales consoletur

Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. (Luke 23:28)

    Meditation

He pauses to warn those who weep for Him. Even in agony, His concern is for souls, for our repentance, not His comfort.

    For our lives

True compassion looks beyond sentiment to the salvation of souls.

  9. 9

    Jesus Falls the Third Time

    Iesus tertia vice cadit

Being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death. (Philippians 2:8)

    Meditation

The summit of Calvary is near, yet He falls once more. Human strength is exhausted; only divine love lifts Him onward.

    For our lives

When we can go no further, grace carries us the rest of the way.

  10. 10

Jesus Is Stripped of His Garments

    Iesus vestibus spoliatur

They divided his garments among them, casting lots. (Matthew 27:35)

    Meditation

Every dignity is removed. The Word through whom all things were made stands naked before a mocking world.

    For our lives

Attachment to honor and possessions must be surrendered to follow Christ.

  11. 11

Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross

    Iesus cruci affigitur

They crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. (Luke 23:33)

    Meditation

Iron pierces the hands that blessed children and healed the sick. The feet that walked on water are fixed to wood. Love is fastened in place for all time.

    For our lives

Sin is nailed to the Cross in Him; we die with Christ to rise with Christ.

  12. 12

    Jesus Dies on the Cross

    Iesus in cruce moritur

Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit!… It is finished. (Luke 23:46 · John 19:30)

    Meditation

The sun darkens. The veil of the Temple tears. The Lamb of God breathes His last. Heaven is opened by His obedience unto death.

    For our lives

The center of history and of every Mass, the sacrifice that reconciles God and man.

  13. 13

Jesus Is Taken Down from the Cross

    Iesus de cruce deponitur

Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud. (Matthew 27:59)

    Meditation

Mary receives her Son’s lifeless body as once she received the Infant at Bethlehem. Piety buries what cruelty killed.

    For our lives

Grief sanctified by faith prepares for the hope of resurrection.

  14. 14

Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb

    Iesus in sepulchro reponitur

He rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. (Matthew 27:60)

    Meditation

The Sabbath begins in silence. The Church waits in darkness, trusting what eyes cannot yet see, that death will not have the last word.

    For our lives

Every Holy Saturday of the soul, burial before dawn, is already touched by Easter.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, You have made this journey of suffering for love of me. I love You above all things. I repent with my whole heart for having offended You. Never permit me to be separated from You again. Grant that I may love You always, and then do with me as You will. Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.
